Shopping v Sailing

After we had lunch with another couple, the girls went shopping, and the guys opted to go sailing. Bad decision as a storm blew in while us guys were out on the water.

Making matters worse, the tide had gone out, grounding the boat. We had to climb overboard and shove it back into deep water.

As my friend stood there, ankles deep in muck, muscles straining against the weight of the boat, and rain pelting his face, he grinned broadly and with unmistakable sincerity said, "Sure beats shopping!"

Living Document?

This Week at Beachside!

blessed 2

Dear Beachside Family and Friends,

There is very little in life that surprises me. That does not mean that I cannot be shocked. I have watched our culture change dramatically over the few short years of my life, and I do not find most of the changes to be an improvement. Many of our leaders in politics and education seem to believe that society must evolve, and become more enlightened. As I observe this evolution, it appears that in the pursuit of enlightenment and understanding, we have actually embraced darkness and confusion.

I was shocked, but not surprised, to hear several of our Senators declare last week that our Constitution is a "living" document. They explained that the "life" they attribute to our most important founding instrument enables it to change its' meaning to accommodate the evolution of our culture. Their position indicates that they believe that the meaning of the words written by the founders is flexible, and that the meaning of the text is not tethered to the convictions of the individuals who wrote it. It is therefore not surprising, but it is shocking, to learn that some holding the highest positions in our government have abandoned the truths upon which our country was founded. Little wonder that there is so much confusion about the truth, when our elected and appointed leaders have themselves abandoned it.

The insistence of those with influence in politics and education upon a non-literal interpretation of the Constitution is only a symptom of a deep and destructive disease. This disease is rejection of authority, and humans first became infected with it in the Garden of Eden. The serpent (Satan) convinced Eve that she could choose to do whatever she wanted without consequence, regardless of the Words spoken by God. Rebellion against God and His Word spread throughout the human race, and we see the results of this hereditary disease in the lives of men everywhere today. Rejecting the authority of the words of the Constitution is disastrous for our nation: rebelling against the Word of God as recorded in the Bible is destructive of our very lives.

Those who desire to twist the Constitution in order to make it say what they want it to say are no different than those who wish to change the Bible in order to make it conform to their own thoughts and feelings. The ultimate goal of these individuals is to ignore both the Constitution and the Bible, and eliminate them completely from our national discourse. Both documents are an impediment to their secular progressive views.

Satan's approach to Eve was to twist what God said.  “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” (Gen. 3:4-5) Paraphrased, the devil was saying "God doesn't really mean what He said: He means that if you choose to eat, you will be like Him." Accepting Satan's interpretation of God's Word, Eve and Adam made a choice that brought death and destruction to themselves and all their children. Re-interpreting the words of the Constitution in order to submit it to the evolution of society will have the same result: the death and destruction of our nation.

Many of our leaders do not believe in absolutes. They do not believe in absolute truth, or absolute authority. There are some of our citizens who have the same convictions. They cannot accept the authority of the Constitution as written in the government of our country, and they will not accept the Absolute Authority of the Word of God in the lives of men. Our Constitution has made our country the finest on earth, and the authority of the Bible was recognized by those who wrote it. Those who reject the authority of the Bible as written tend to reject the authority of the Constitution as written. Proverbs 13:13 tells us "Whoever despises the word and counsel of God brings destruction upon himself, But he who reverently fears and respects the commandment of God will be rewarded."

Embracing the authority of the Constitution as written will absolutely bless the politicians and judges who do so, and submitting to the Absolute Authority of God's Word will bless us all – Absolutely! I find that neither surprising nor shocking, for the Word says "Blessed fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God is the nation whose God is the Lord.." (Psalm 33:12)

Fishy Dinner

A friend hosted a dinner party for people from work and everyone was encouraged to bring their children. All during the sit-down dinner one co-worker's three-year-old girl stared at the man sitting across from her. The girl could hardly eat her food from staring.

The man checked his tie, felt his face for food, patted his hair in place, but nothing stopped her from staring at him. He tried his best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for him. He asked her, "Excuse me little girl, but why do you keep staring at me?"

Everyone at the table had noticed her behavior, and the table went quiet for her response. The little girl said, "I just want to see how you drink like a fish."

You Can Stay

The doorbell rings. A man opens the door and there's his mother-in-law on the front step.

She asks, "Can I stay here for a few days?"

The man says, "Sure you can." And he closes the door.

God's Grace

Dear Beachside Family and Friends,

It's been thirty years since I received a citation for speeding. I was traveling westbound on I-10 near Wellborn Florida when I was pulled over by a State Trooper. He asked me to come to his vehicle and look at his radar display, which read 70 mph. The only problem was that I was driving in an 55 mph zone. I was caught breaking the law, and the result could be costly. While waiting on the officer to run my license and insurance information, my mind became occupied with the age - old question: would he enforce the law, or would grace prevail?

Every born-again believer has had an encounter with God's grace. The Bible makes this clear in Ephesians 2:8, where it says "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God..." We could not meet the standards of God's law, so He offered His Own Son Jesus on the cross, whose blood paid the price for our failure. When we place our faith in Jesus, God's grace avails for us, and we are saved from eternity in hell. Thank God for His grace!

Grace is fundamental to the Father's eternal plan for us, and we must understand how it operates. There are many, even those who attend church, who believe that the grace of God covers all their actions in this life, even willful rebellion against  His Word. It is true that our Heavenly Father has extended grace to the inhabitants of the earth, and that the institution of the New Covenant enables Him to withhold judgment for the sinful actions of man. If we lived in Old Testament times, many common, acceptable sins in our society would be punished by death. The prophet Ezekiei wrote “Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die." (Ezekiel 18:4) Murder, adultery, homosexuality, and even rebellion against parents were death penalty offenses under the Old Covenant. When individuals were convicted of these and many other acts, death was exacted without mercy or grace.

Thank God for the grace given to us in these New Testament times! Offenses worthy of death are covered by His grace and mercy, and His judgment does not fall on us; yet as wonderful as God's grace is, it does not prevent all consequences for acts of sin in this life. While the grace of God avails for us, there is one at work in the earth who mercilessly enforces consequences for sin. His name is Satan. If we continue to knowingly sin against God and His Word, Satan uses our rebellion as his legal right to destroy our lives. He has no grace whatsoever, and thrills to exact the penalty for continued sin. We can actually remove ourselves from the covering of the grace of God, and let the devil run rampant in our lives. As Hebrews 10:26 tells us "For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins"

"Progressive" society has accepted sinful lifestyles as a normal state without consequence. Some Christians even cite God's grace as a reason to continue in immoral lifestyles that are contrary to His Word. They point to Jesus' statement to the woman convicted of adultery in John 8:10-11: "When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you." Many stop reading there, and declare that since Jesus did not demand the enforcement of the penalty, that the grace of God will cover continued sin. They leave out the next few words where Jesus said "go and sin no more.”

Grace abounds for those that have committed acts of adultery, homosexuality, thievery, murder, dishonesty, and rebellion against God, but there is a difference between committing a sin, and continuing in sin. Paul addressed this to the church in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.  When Paul said "such were some of you", he points out that that immoral lifestyles should be things of the past, not practiced continually by those who hope for the covering of God's grace. God loves us, forgives us, and wants us to be free, but Satan exploits those who rebel against God's Word, keeping them in bondage.

While I sat on the side of I-10 thirty years ago, I was hoping the trooper would give me a warning and tell me " I don't condemn you: go your way, and speed no more." I didn't hold out much hope though, because I knew he was looking at my record and would find previous citations. Because I continued to speed even after previous tickets, I received another one, resulting in a fine and traffic school. The consequences of my continued rebellion against the laws of Florida moved me out of the covering of grace. I have learned what Jesus meant what said when he said "go and sin no more." Thirty years ago I threw out my radar detector, and set my cruise control in compliance with the speed limit. I finally understood what grace was all about. Since then, I have gone my way, and I speed no more!

Still Ahead

My wife and I were comparing notes the other day. "I have a higher IQ, did better on my SAT's, and make more money than you," she pointed out.

"Yeah, but when you step back and look at the big picture, I’m still ahead," I said.

She looked mystified. "How do you figure?"

"I married better," I replied.

Softball

Two 90-year-old women, Bertha and Betty, had been friends all of their lives.

When it was clear that Bertha was dying, Betty visited her every day.
One day Betty said, “Bertha, we both loved playing softball all our lives, and we played all through high school. Please do me one favor: When you get to heaven, somehow you must let me know if there’s women’s softball there.”
Bertha looked up at Betty from her deathbed and said, “Betty, you’ve been my best friend for many years. If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favor for you.”
Shortly after that, Bertha passed on.
A few nights later, Betty was awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to her, “Betty, Betty.”
“Who is it?” asked Betty, sitting up suddenly. “Who is it?”
“Betty — it’s me, Bertha.”
“You’re not Bertha. Bertha just died.”
“I’m telling you, it’s me, Bertha,” insisted the voice.
“Bertha! Where are you?”
“In heaven,” replied Bertha. “I have some really good news and a little bad news.”
“Tell me the good news first,” said Betty.
“The good news,” Bertha said, “is that there’s women’s softball in heaven. Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before me are here, too. Even better than that, we’re all young again. Better still, it’s always springtime and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play softball all we want, and we never get tired.”
“That’s fantastic,” said Betty. “It’s beyond my wildest dreams! So what’s the bad news?”
“You’re pitching Tuesday.”

proverbs3 2

Dear Beachside Family and Friends,

As I observe the current healthcare and health insurance debate in Washington, this fact has become clear to me: Americans put their trust in Government, Insurance companies, Doctors, and Medicine for their health and happiness. Something else that is patently obvious to me is that politicians exploit our citizens' trust in others to solve their problems in order to secure votes and enhance their own power. It is a mess of titanic proportion, and if reason and sense do not prevail, the American healthcare system will go the way of the Titanic.

Who should we trust with our healthcare? Who has the knowledge and ability to heal us and keep us healthy? Is it the Government. Is it Politicians? Is if Doctors? Is it Insurance companies? Do any of these really have the power to keep us well?

To all the current solutions offered by the people and organizations I just mentioned, I say a resounding NO! It is impossible for men to heal and fix something we have not created. We do have power to repair our own creations. We can fix automobiles, aircraft, and other machines, restoring them and making them new. They are the creation of our hands, and we have the capability to repair them. We record the procedures necessary and print them as Owner's Manuals. When I need information on the repair and maintenance of my truck, I consult the manual.

Our bodies are not the creation of our own hands, but of God's. "Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person." (Gen 2:7) God made each of our bodies. He oversees our formation in the womb, as Psalm 139:14-15 tells us: "Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb." God made our bodies, and He alone is able to fully heal and restore them.

To this end, He wrote an Owner's Manual. We call it the Bible. Everything we need to know about healing and health can be found in its' pages. God says "My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, And health (medicine) to all their flesh." (Pro 4:20-22) He tells us that the medicine we need is the Word of God, and that it will bring us life when taken regularly. While I am grateful for doctors and their skills, they can only treat. Our Creator does far more than treat disease: He heals and restores. God wrote the manual for our bodies, and it says "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers." (3 John 1:2)

The question we face about healthcare is really not about the role of Government, the effectiveness of Insurance policies, or the skill of Doctors. It is about who we are going to trust with our health. Will we trust men, who do not have the power to heal and restore our bodies, or will we trust the One Who created us? Will we put our faith in humanity, or put our faith in God? Insurance, doctors, and medicine are not the answer. Paul wrote "For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh," (Phil 3:3) We have a covenant with our Maker that guarantees healing and health when we take His medicine, the Word of God.

Trusting our healthcare to Government, Doctors, and Insurers only results in a temporary reprieve from sickness and disease. When we put our healthcare in God's hands, the results are amazing. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths." (Pro 3:5-6)  When we trust Him and take the medicine of the Word, we will activate the greatest policy ever written: Heaith Assurance! Paul wrote "But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured..." (2 Tim 3:14) The Word assures us that healing and health are the will of God. Health Assurance is available to all without cost - it's in the Owner's Manual, the Bible!
