A Fresh Start after the death of a loved one

How to Get a Fresh Start After a Loved One’s Passing

When a loved one passes, it can be incredibly difficult to remain inside the home you once shared. The house is full of memories, and you are constantly reminded that your loved one is no longer there. If your loved one died while inside the home, the emotional pain may be even more difficult to endure.  For some, it may be necessary to move to a new home to start over in a place that isn’t overflowing with special memories. Although the pain will still be in your heart, you have the advantage of living in a new environment that might help you deal with your sadness. If you have recently lost a loved one and are considering moving to a new home, read these tips to help get started.

Selling Your Home

Most people can’t afford to own two homes, so you probably need to sell your home before you move out. The less stressful thing to do is to hire an experienced realtor to put your home on the market. The realtor will provide you with valuable information about the market in your area, and share advice on how to stage your home in order to make it more desirable to potential home buyers. Realtors also handle the complicated legal matters when you sell your home.

Make sure your home is free from clutter and looks its best before any home buyers view it. One option is to put non-essential items into a self-storage facility. The average monthly price to book a self-storage unit in Panama City Beach is $94.05. Remove your pets while showing your home. You may even want to have them stay at a kennel or at a friend’s house while your home is on the market. Take down any family photos. People who view your home don’t want to see photos of your family on the walls. They want to imagine their own family living there, but that’s hard to do if the walls are full of your family pictures.

Once you sell your home, consider hiring a one-time cleaning or move-out service to help you save time. If you’re mourning a loved one’s death, you probably want to move out of the old house as soon as possible. A cleaning or move-out service will do the cleaning for you, enabling you to focus on your new life inside your new home. HomeAdvisor reports that the average  price for a one-time interior house cleaning is between $67 and $195. Most cleaners can get the job done in about three hours.

Buying a Home

When you begin your house hunt, consider your budget before getting your heart set on a specific house. Getting preapproved for a home loan is one of the best ways to begin your search. The loan amount you are approved for will help you find the right house for your budget. According to NerdWallet, “with a preapproval letter from your lender, real estate agents and sellers know you are a serious buyer.”

Before deciding on a home, consider how much renovation needs to be done. Is the home move-in ready, or does it need a bit of work? If the kitchen or bathroom require remodeling, your overall costs go up. Forbes states that not only do you need to think about the price of new cabinets, countertops, and appliances, but you also need to consider the cost of labor. All of this can really add up if you’re not careful.

Deciding Which of Your Loved One’s Items to Keep

After a loved one passes away, you have to make the difficult decision of what to do with his or her things. Psychology Today reports that belongings “left behind can take on a new emotional attachment to the one who died.” It’s tough to give away clothing or collections your loved one once treasured. For this reason, you need to be prepared to make difficult choices in order to remove these things from your home.

If you don’t think you can go through the belongings by yourself, ask family members or close friends to help you. Figure out which items to keep, donate, discard, or give away. If you want to keep a few of your loved one’s clothes, consider taking pieces of material from the clothes and creating a quilt or other special craft. Take pictures of items that you can’t keep and create an album so you can always remember them.

After a loved one passes away, it’s often too painful to remain in the home you once shared. All of the loved one’s belongings surround you. Whether it’s a toothbrush, clothes, a special collection, or books, every item is attached to a memory. For this reason, people who lose a loved one sometimes choose to move to a new home. The decision is never an easy one, but it can lead to a fresh start where you can create new memories.

God Is Good All The Time

This Week at Beachside!

Dear Beachside a Family and Friends,

Every day that passes it becomes even more evident that our culture is under assault. Forces both within, and without our nation are determined to destroy our heritage and the principles which have made our nation great. President Ronald Reagan once said "America is not good because she is great, she is great because she is good." Thirty years after this proclamation, we find the very foundation of our goodness challenged by the erosion of our once prominent Judeo – Christian values.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the church itself. In an attempt to remain "culturally relevant", we have strayed from the teachings of the Word of God and replaced them with our better "more inclusive" ideas. Only three decades ago it would be unheard of to accept the practice of homosexual, bisexual, and transsexual lifestyles in the church. Overwhelmed by the desire to remain "relevant" and non-judgmental, many who say they are Christians advocate for gay marriage, sex changes and gender redefinition. As to the latter, do we now assume that God was confused when he made us? That He created us with the wrong body? Or do we simply believe that God has given us the power to choose what sex we belong to? No doubt interesting questions for today's culture, but answered by God in Isaiah 29:18 "You are confused. You think the clay is equal to the potter. You think that an object can tell the one who made it, “You didn’t make me.”This is like a pot telling its maker, “You don’t know anything.”

Goodness does not originate with men. In Mark 10:18 Jesus said "only God is good." Men are not inherently good, but when they connect with God, he changes their very nature and places His goodness inside them. This is not a transformation that takes place through religion, but only through a relationship with the Creator. There is only one way into a relationship with God, and it has nothing to do with what men think or feel about Him. It has everything to do with what God says. Jesus ended all speculation about a relationship with God when he said in John 14:26 "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father but by me."

In order to recover our culture and return our nation to the values it was founded upon, we must clearly embrace good, and turn from evil. We must call our nation to repentance, and it must begin with those who say they are  Christians. Do we wish to be "relevant" to this world, or relevant to God? We can never change this world by embracing its' departure from God and His Word. The power to be truly relevant comes only from the presence of the Word of God in our churches and our lives, not the absence of it. Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah when he said "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God." (Matt 15:8-9)

The modern church has become just as religious as the church my generation rejected. We have come to believe that coffee and a concert is true worship, and that the Bible cannot be relied upon because it offends those who choose to live lives contrary to its' teachings. Only a relationship with Jesus offers eternal life. A relationship with a church or a small group cannot save us: Our better ideas cannot help us or others. The solution for our nation and our lives is simple. We must accept Jesus as the only way into a relationship with God, turn from our sins, and accept the Bible as the Authority in the lives of men. Let us once again be good because God is good.

I know revival is coming, and I am excited about what God is doing. Join me in pursuing the Word of God and putting Jesus first place in our lives. Change is coming to our nation, and to the world. When Jesus returns, will He find us faithful to His Word? Something to think about!

Recently Released

Steven Michael Hudson, 40, was being held in jail Saturday on an open count of murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend, 41-year-old Ashley Brooke Smith, inside the home they shared at 1216 Illinois Ave.

LYNN HAVEN — An argument inside a Lynn Haven home Friday evening ended with a woman suffering fatal gunshot wounds and her boyfriend being tracked down and arrested, according to the Lynn Haven Police Department.

Steven Michael Hudson, 40, was being held in jail Saturday on an open count of murder in connection with the case. Lynn Haven Police Department officials reported that at about 5 p.m. Friday a domestic dispute led to Hudson allegedly fatally shooting 41-year-old Ashley Brooke Smith inside the home they shared at 1216 Illinois Ave.

Hudson, a recently released convict, allegedly fled the scene afterward but was taken into custody shortly afterward, officers reported.

When LHPD responded to the Illinois Avenue home, they found Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to her neck and abdomen, according to the reports. As she was rushed to a local hospital, investigators identified Hudson as the suspected shooter, officers reported.

“Both Hudson and Smith had been recently living together ...,” officers wrote. “Hudson and Smith are believed to have been engaged in a domestic dispute immediately prior to the shooting.”

Smith was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Witnesses told police they saw Hudson with a gun in his hand as he fled the house, LHPD reported.

Numerous officers descended on the area and began looking for Hudson, who was spotted by Bay County Sheriff’s Office deputies on State 77 heading back toward Lynn Haven. Deputies stopped Hudson at Porter Park in Lynn Haven, and he was taken to the Lynn Haven Police Station for questioning.

Hudson admitted to the shooting and told officers that he and Smith had been dating only a few months, police reported. He then was taken to the Bay County Jail where he is being held on an open count of murder.

Hudson had been released from prison in February after serving a three-year sentence from 2015 for felony fleeing and eluding officers. He has a lengthy criminal history that includes a conviction for armed trespassing and several incidents of stalking that were later dropped by prosecutors.

LHPD reported that the investigation into Smith’s death is continuing. Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to call the LHPD at 850-265-4111.

Small Waves Big Smiles

PANAMA CITY BEACH — When Mary Vaughan moved from up north to Panama City Beach four summers ago, she began looking for positive experiences for her 9-year-old son, Blake, who is autistic.

It didn’t take long before she found an unlikely match: surfing.

“I was a nervous wreck,” Vaughan said. “When he got on the surfboard and was able to stand up that first day — the look in his eyes was not concern about how others see him. He didn’t have a care in the world, and that’s what I loved about it.”

Vaughan spoke with The News Herald while Blake rode wave after wave Saturday near M.B. Miller Pier, 12213 Front Beach Road.

It was part of the free event called Autism Surfs PCB. Dozens of children, parents and volunteers participated in the mainstreaming event, which takes place every third Saturday of the summer months with weather permitting. The goal is to allow families to relax while their children — of all ages, with or without disabilities — learn to surf in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Julie Clark, president of the nonprofit organization Autism Surfs PCB, said that surfing not only raises awareness to the needs of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and provides them with sensory experiences, but it also instills a sense of pride and confidence.

“The sense of accomplishment is huge,” Clark said. “You can tell by the smiles on their faces, and they take to it pretty good.”

Vaughan said she was reluctant at first because she was not familiar with the Gulf of Mexico, which can be daunting for a child with a disability. But once she saw the volunteers’ interactions with Blake, her concerns were set aside.

“They just have a passion for it,” Vaughan said. “They’re really giving and concerned about the emotional comfort of the kids. As a parent, it’s a relief to have people that get your kid.”

As she and Blake continued to attend the Autism Surfs PCB events, Vaughan also began establishing a support network of physicians, teachers and other parents of children with ASD, she said.

Clark said the free event began four years ago. The idea grew from her experience working in a child care center and her love of surfing. One of the children, Chloe, was diagnosed with ASD and generally wanted to be left to her own activities. However, once sand and water was added to the equation, Chloe opened up to people.

The event isn’t restricted to children with autism, though. Clark said they have taught people with a wide range of disabilities to surf. At one point, the group hosted a girl who had been paralyzed.

“She’d never touched the sand or the water before,” Clark said. “But we had her out of her wheelchair and on a surf board.”

Ultimately, people of any age and range of ability are invited to attend the free event.

“We’re all a family, and we’re all accepted,” Clark said.

The nonprofit organization provides boards, life jackets, breakfast, water, lunch and free drawings at the end for registered children. Area organizations will have free information booths on site, and participating children will receive a free T-shirt.

Clark said they always are in need of volunteers also, whether they want to get experience in the field of teaching people with disabilities or just want to help out in the community.

“They’ll definitely leave with a full heart,” she added.

Any donations of water, products to give out during the raffle or funds can be arranged with Clark. For details, call 850-527-0532, email autismsurfspcb@yahoo.com or visit the website, AutismSurfsPCB.org.

Lynn Haven Shooting

LYNN HAVEN — Police are investigating a shooting inside a suburban neighborhood home in Lynn Haven.

Details were sparse immediately following the shooting. The names of the people involved had yet to be released late Friday.

Lynn Haven Police Department officers responded about 5:30 p.m. Friday to 1216 Illinois Ave. to reports of injuries suffered from a gunshot. An unidentified victim was rushed to a hospital afterward as crime scene investigators descended on the scene. Police on scene reported a suspect was in custody, but the suspect’s name also had yet to be released.

The severity of the injuries suffered by the victim was not immediately released by LHPD Chief Matt Riemer.

As crime scene tape waved in the breeze, the neighborhood around 1216 Illinois was quiet. Investigators documented the scene and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office assisted in interviewing potential witnesses. Most of the witnesses on scene said they arrived after the shooting and declined to comment further.

Riemer said he was unsure if the injuries were fatal from the gunshot wound, but officers had identified the person they believe to be the shooter.

“We have a subject we are speaking with,” Riemer said.

His Creation

Dear Beachside Family and Friends,

The most famous painting in the world resides in the Louvre Museum in Paris, where it is the main attraction.  More than six million people each year file by the iconic Mona Lisa, a portrait whose eyes and mysterious smile appear to follow its' admirers. Untold millions have seen it, songs have been sung about it, and aspiring painters continue to study this  intriguing work of art creased more than 500 years ago.

This beloved and influential painting did not fall from the sky or appear out of thin air, nor did it somehow teleport here from another dimension. It owes its existence to someone who existed before it. The Mona Lisa was created by an artist, and its' presence in the halls of the Louvre is a constant testimony to the existence of the one who created it, the scientist, engineer, sculptor and painter Leonardo Davinci.

Davinci himself understood that Someone Higher created human beings, just as he himself created art and machines. He wrote "rejoice that our Creator has endowed us with such an excellent instrument as the intellect." The proof of Leonardo Davinci's existence is in the things that he created that remain until this day. Every individual that observes the smiling Mona Lisa is observing proof of Leonardo's existence.

We can apply the same thought process to prove the existence of a Personal God. The apostle Paul wrote " For ever since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through His workmanship [all His creation, the wonderful things that He has made], so that they [who fail to believe and trust in Him] are without excuse and without defense." (Romans 1:20) The creation itself, the world and all that is in it, proclaims  that God exists. Psalm 19:1 declares "The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship." As Davinci is known by his existing works, even more so God is known by His.

The beauty of the Father's works is beyond compare. The earth and all its' fullness, the expanse of sky and space, the oceans and their pathless depths all inform us of the Creator. We observe His handiwork every day. He made everything we see and called It good, yet He still lacked one piece to finish His masterpiece mosaic. He needed someone to enjoy it with.

On the sixth day of creation He formed Adam out of the dust of the earth and breathed life into him. He then formed Eve around Adam's rib, blessing them, and walking with them in the garden He made specifically for them. He created them in His image and purposed that they would fellowship with Him. Even when they rebelled against Him, He sent His Son Jesus to deliver their descendants out of the thralldom of Satan. Humans are the most beautiful of all God's works, and He willingly paid the highest price for our redemption.

Jesus fully understands the value of mankind, for He is both man and God. He told the people "It is written in your own Scriptures that God said to certain leaders of the people, ‘I say, you are gods!’ And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called ‘gods,’ why do you call it blasphemy when I say, ‘I am the Son of God’? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world. (John 10:34-36)

Just as the Mona Lisa is considered Leonardo Davinci's most famous and enduring work, we are the Father's highest, most beautiful, and enduring creation. When this earth and all that is in it passes away, we will still be around to enjoy the new heaven and new earth God promises to create. It will be infinitely more beautiful than the planet we currently enjoy, but we will still be the most blessed and important creation in the eyes of our Father. Our existence proves His existence. We are created in His image to enjoy what He has made and do miraculous, god-like things for His glory. He made us and filled us with creative power to do far more than create amazing works of art. The power that created the universe lives in us. As His children, let's use the power we have been given to do what Jesus did: heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons. We have freely received, now let us freely give! (Matthew 10:8)

Dear Beachside Family and Friends,

It seems like stating the obvious to say "life is challenging", yet acknowledging this fact is an important step in taking action to win when challenged. At this moment, each one of us is facing resistance to the plan of God in our personal health, business, family, or finances. Life cannot be experienced apart from trials, but the trials of life can be experienced apart from defeat. The circumstances of our existence are temporary. What exists in the world around us today may be gone tomorrow. The issues that seem so important this month may have little relevance next month. The years come and go, and our situation constantly changes. This is a fact of life.

Some grow weary of the battle. Solomon said "But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere." (Ecc 2:11) He became so worn out that depression set in, and he considered life to be without meaning. It is amazing to think that the richest man who has ever lived felt so despondent about his life, yet he clearly did. He was unhappy no matter what happened. If life was good, he was unhappy. If life was bad, he was unhappier still. Why did the wisest man in the world give in to an attitude of "whatever happens, happens, Que sera, sera?"

Solomon was depressed because overcoming challenges trough hard work alone can never satisfy. Although raised by his father David to reverence and worship the Lord, Solomon abandoned pursuing a relationship with God and tried to find meaning in his own success. Even winning over adversity and trials did not bring satisfaction, because God was not involved. In our day, there are many men and women that the world would call successful, but they find themselves in the same condition as Solomon: nothing seems worthwhile.

Christians can find themselves in similar situations. They work hard to overcome the challenges satan brings into their lives, and grow weary doing so. The effort required to live by faith seems daunting to many. At times it can feel overwhelming, leading to the temptation to follow in the thought process of Solomon and say " it"s not worth it". It is absolutely true that pursuing healing, prosperity, deliverance, and freedom in our own strength is not worth it. To do so is a monumental waste of time and energy.

Do we have to work it out on our own? Are we doomed to strive for victory on our own and never be satisfied even when we win? To these questions I say a resounding NO! There is a way to be happy and satisfied even n the midst of the greatest challenges of our lives. It is all a matter of perspective. If I see myself sick and trying to get healed, poor and trying to gain prosperity, or confused and attempting to have peace, I am defeated already. If my perception of the Christian life is like this, then I will always be working to obtain things that are beyond my ability.

If I choose a different way of seeing myself, then I can achieve all that God has for me and fully enjoy the victories I will experience. The secret is this: I must see myself as God sees me. Since Jesus defeated satan and lives in our hearts, God looks at us in the same way He looks at His Son: completely and totally Victorious! Jesus has already provided health, healing, prosperity, and peace for us through His work on the cross. If we understand this, then we will perceive ourselves and our lives in a different way. We ARE healed and satan is trying to steal our health from us! We ARE prosperous and satan is trying to steal our prosperity! We ARE peaceful and satan is trying to steal our peace! When we see life in this way, we will no longer attempt to obtain these things..We will rest in the knowledge that Healing, Prosperity, and Peace BELONG TO US RIGHT NOW BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS HAS ALREADY DONE!

When we know these things, we can avoid the temptation to think the lives we live are not worthwhile. We can understand what Paul meant when he wrote "So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up." (Gal 6:9) We can rest, confident that satan cannot succeed in taking what belongs to us. Hebrews 4:10 tells us "For the person who has entered His rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from His." Jesus has already defeated the devil for us.  All we need do is resist Satan's paltry efforts to deceive us with the Word of God and the Name of Jesus. We can find rest in all of life's challenges through our relationship with Him!

Dear Beachside Family and Friends,

It has been said that we live in a multi – cultural society. It certainly is true that our country is inhabited by many who speak languages other than English, and posess values different than those of traditional Americans. In some cases, communication between citizens and non-citizens has become difficult, and people do not understand each other.

I heard once that the United States and Great Britain were two great countries separated by a common language. This is certainly true when considering accent. While American English and the Kings English do differ in sound from each other, most of the words and concepts are derived from common ancestry, In addition, traditional English values and traditional American values are similar, because they are at their foundation Christian.

While American English speakers and British English speakers usually understand each other, the situation inside our borders is different than it once was. Enclaves exist in our nation where people speak exclusively Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, and other languages. If I were to go to a Spanish speaking market and need assistance, I am sure I could find a clerk willing to help. I could ask him in English what I am looking for, and he would smile at me and desire to help, yet he could not. I could ask him over and over where the potatoes were, but unless I asked him " Donde estan las papas?", he would be unable to help. Why? The answer is simple: unless I speak his language he cannot help me with my problem. He is ready and willing to help, but in order to act on my behalf he must understand me. We must speak the same language.

Communication problems do not exist solely between human beings. In order to experience the blessings of God in our lives, we must be able to communicate effectively with Him. Many Christians do not understand why it seems they are not getting through to God. They know that God desires to bless them, but wonder why they have not yet seen the benefits God promises in His word.  This situation exists not because God is holding out, but because there is a communication problem. There is a language barrier between God and some believers.

When I need God's help with a problem, I must speak the same language He does. God only speaks one language, He expresses it in many different human dialects, but He speaks just one language. HE SPEAKS BIBLE! If I need the help of the Spanish speaking clerk I mentioned earlier, I must speak his language. If I want the blessings and benefits of God, I must speak His language.  I MUST SPEAK BIBLE, the language of faith. John points this out in 1 John 5:14-15 "Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him." Where do we find His will? In the Bible! We have confidence that if we speak God's language in prayer, He hears and answers our prayers. He does not answer them because we beg and cry. He answers prayers when we speak the Word, the language of faith. He answers our prayers because we speak Bible!

When I need God's intervention in my life, it is an absolute waste of time to complain to Him about my circumstances and how badly i feel. God does not speak the language of complaint, sickness, poverty, or depression. HE SPEAKS BIBLE!  If I desire to communicate effectively with Him, I need to find out what the Bible says about my problem and speak with Him in His language: the language of faith, healing, and deliverance. GOD SPEAKS BIBLE, AND IF I WANT HIS HELP, I MUST SPEAK BIBLE!

God operates solely by faith, and those of us who expect His benefits must operate the same way. Since Rom. 10:17 tells us that faith comes from hearing the word of God, when we speak Bible, our faith is strengthened and we please Him. (Hen 11:6) Speaking God's language is also essential because "whatsoever is not of faith is sin." (Rom 14:23b) Since the Greek text tells us that sin is "missing the mark", we must not miss out on proper communication with God. There should be no language barrier between us and our Father: "For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he SAYS will be done, he will have whatever he SAYS. (Mark 11:23) WE MUST SPEAK BIBLE!

Dazed & Confused

we win

Dear Beachside Family and Friends,

In January of 1969 the acid rock/psychedelic rock/heavy metal band Led Zeppelin released a song entitled "Dazed and Confused." One of several successful songs on their self-named debut album, "Dazed and Confused" not only reflected the thoughts of the author and performers, but also was a commentary on the state of society in the late 60's, at least among young "progressives".

Almost fifty years later it can easily be observed that our culture has not improved from "dazed and confused". If anything, society seems more confused and detached from reality than five decades ago.  Children are wantonly slain in the womb for the convenience of their mothers, individuals mutilate their God-created bodies in a fruitless attempt to change their sex, and some pastors teach that the contents of the Bible are not moral absolutes, but guidelines, as if the scripture was an evolved "pirate code". Arrgh!

Confusion is never the work of God. 1 Corinthians 14:33 tells us "For God is not the author of confusion but of peace.." He is a protector of life, not the purveyor of death, as Jesus revealed in John 10:10, declaring that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy: I am come that they may have life and more abundant life". God is never confused. He did not inspire advances in medicines and medical technology for the purpose of ending the lives of innocent children. He did not give talent and highly developed skills to surgeons for the purpose of attempting to change what He created.

How is it that we accept these things and call them progress? Progress should be defined as forward momentum, not a decent into confusion and destruction. Progress should embody the advancement of life, the life through which God blesses mankind and delivers us from our own folly. Is it not sensible to believe that children are conceived to live and not die, and that God's natural order of sexuality is established at the moment of conception? He never makes a mistake, and only those blinded to the truth could embrace the confusion so readlly accepted by many who say they know and love Him.

Paul wrote "But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. (2 Corinthians 4:3-4) The God of this age is none other than the deceiver Lucifer, who believed that he could dethrone God. We know him as Satan, and his blindness has infected humanity, whom he deceives into believing that they themselves are God, free to reject Divine plan and purpose without consequence.

Satan was so dazed and confused that he had Jesus murdered, crucified by clueless Roman authorities. He believed that he had dealt with his "Jesus problem" permanently. In his pride and confusion, he made the second greatest mistake in his existence. The Word reveals "But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (1 Corinthians 2:7-8) in Satan's arrogance he killed Jesus, facilitating the resurrection of the Lord of Glory and establishing His Church, and "the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18)

Since Satan and his confusion cannot prevail against both-again believers in Jesus, we can remain at peace in the midst of the cultural storm. We should exercise our faith, take authority over the devil, and speak words of truth and life into the storm of confusion that besets our society and nation. Peace will prevail, and sense will return if we stand for life and the truth of God's Word. We need never be  "dazed and confused". We can be confident in our future as believers. By the way, I've read the back of the Book, and WE WIN!

My Bond

Dear Beachside Family and Friends:

There was a time in our homes, businesses, churches, and society at large when people declared that their word was their bond, Honesty and integrity were the norm, not character traits exhibited by only a few. Contracts were concluded with a handshake, not with reams of fine print that serve to manipulate and provide hidden methods of escape from the very things stated in them,

In time past, attorneys were most often engaged in  government, corporate, and real estate law. They also provided criminal defense and civil services to those who needed them. The divorce rate was so low that practicing family law alone was not profitable. Today it seems that the majority of lawyers are engaged either in representing those who are filing lawsuits or defending those who are being sued, writing ironclad contracts, or finding ways to shatter the supposed ironclad words of others. The era of "my word is my bond" has been relegated to the ash heap of history.

Integrity and honesty were were under assault from the religious and political leaders of Jesus' day. When challenged by the religious authorities, He made a compelling observation. "For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me!" (John 8:44-45)

It is not natural for those who have been born again to lie. Although those in the world are of their father the devil and often lie without hesitation, believers should not live this way. We are disciples of Jesus Christ, and children of the  Most High God. We are living hosts to the Spirit of God, of whom Jesus spoke in John 16:13 "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth..." The truth resides in us, and we should always represent the Father well by speaking the truth. Our word should still be our bond, as stated in Psalm 15:1-4 "Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?...Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts."

Our society needs men and women of integrity and honesty in order to survive the challenging times in which we live. The "credibility gap" (a term describing the space between rhetoric and the truth in politics) has widened to Grand Canyon proportions. I am amazed at how some of our current leaders and candidates for office lie to the public and continue to lie even when directly confronted with the truth. It is inconceivable that most of the news media cover up for the liars and hide the truth, yet they do so on a daily basis. Although shocked by the deeds of these dissemblers, I am not surprised. They lie as a matter of course for this reason: the truth is not in them. To reprise John 8:44 "For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him."

While we understand the source of the lies and cover-ups, we should never find them acceptable . Satan's children will always lie, often without conviction. The world has a term for those who tell untruths without remorse. They call it pathological. We know it to be demoniacal.  Anyone call tell a lie, repent, receive forgiveness from God and stop lying. They are then not identified as liars. Those who continue to lie place their eternity in jeopardy , for the Bible tells us "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Rev 21:8)

How do we deal with those who lie and cover up the truth? Do we allow them to continue unchallenged, or should we confront them? God expects all believers to " not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ," (Eph 4:14-15) We must expose falsehood by speaking the truth, and not allow ourselves to be deceived. It is unacceptable for us to lie to each other, and we should hold public officials, candidates, and the news media to the same standard. They should stop the lies and acknowledge the truth. Many will not, but perhaps some will. Let us pray for a return to integrity and honesty among our leaders and our people. Let us pray for revival in our land. Let us support the truth, and let our light shine! "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it." (John 1:5)
